The
College of Arts and Humanities is composed of the English,
Foreign Languages, History, Mass Communications, and Visual
and Performing Arts departments.
The college provides courses to all areas of the University,
emphasizing the broad view of liberal education. It is committed
to preparing students to become critically aware of political,
social, and economic institutions and their problems, and
to instill within students the basic concepts of truth and
beauty, an orderly process of thinking, and a hierarchy of
values. To enhance the cultural climate of the University,
the college also provides concerts, theatre productions, art
exhibits, and lectures. Additionally, it prepares majors for
graduate and professional schools and promotes and provides
leadership in the arts.
Graduates of the college are expected to demonstrate a high
level of mastery of communication skills and the capability
of defining problems or issues and investigating them, utilizing
a wide variety of resources and reaching some conclusions
about them. Additionally, they are prepared to respond to
and expand the creative and artistic efforts of humanity and
demonstrate an awareness of and a concern for current events,
and they proceed to develop and express convictions about
these events.
Undergraduate degree offerings in the College of Arts and
Humanities are Bachelor of Arts in English, Bachelor of Arts
in Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts in French, Bachelor of Arts
in History, Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, Bachelor
of Arts in Spanish, Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication,
and Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. A Bachelor of Music
and an Associate of Arts in Jazz, with emphasis in Louisiana
music, also are offered.
Graduate degree offerings are a Master of Arts in Mass Communications,
in cooperation with Louisiana State University, and a Master
of Arts in Social Science, in cooperation with the School
of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and the College of Sciences.
