Contest Rules

Eligibility

All entrants must be high school or college students in Louisiana and must be amateur photographers, i.e. they must not have ever received compensation for their photography.

 

Contest Guidelines

Photographs submitted to the contest must be only those taken by the contestant. A photo of someone else's photo is not acceptable.

 

Photographs taken by digital camera or standard camera and scanned both will be accepted.  If participants using standard cameras do not have access to a scanner, they may submit the photo for scanning to the ASCE Branch Representative nearest to them (email the Younger Member representative on our Home Page to obtain names and addresses).

 

Photos must not include any humans.  The organizer of the photo contest will not be responsible for any claims against infringement of the right of privacy by the picture submitted.

 

Pictures displaying copyright notices, date marks or other written information, as well as pictures with advertisements, will not be accepted. Pornography or images close to pornography, pictures showing violence, etc., as well as pictures that might violate law or common rules also will not be accepted.

 

Images must be JPEG format, 300 dpi resolution at a minimum of 3300 x 2550 pixels. Images can be full color or duotone.   The maximum file size is 4MB.

 

To be considered, images must be emailed AS ATTACHMENTS (not included in the body of an email) to pictureperfect@subr.edu with the following information:

 

1. Entrant’s full name.

2. Entrant’s school or university, and grade level (major and classification for college students).

3. Name and location of the photo subject (e.g. Louisiana State Capitol Building, Baton Rouge).

4. One or two sentences telling why you chose the subject of your photo as a positive example of  civil engineering in Louisiana.

5. Filenames must follow specific guidelines.  For example, Betty Jones submits two pictures of the Route 51 overpass; the files would be named "jones_route_51_overpass_1.jpg" and "jones_route_51_overpass_2. jpg." Frank Smith submits one picture of the Landmark Elementary School; the file would be named "smith_landmarkschool_1.jpg."

 

Copyright in the submitted photographs remains the property of the contestant. Winners will be required to authorize the contest organizer to reproduce the photographs in writing.

 

Regarding privacy, no private data submitted to the photo contest will be passed to third parties.

 

Every effort will be made to assure the photo contest runs smoothly, but the organizer of the photo contest will not be responsible for any losses or damages to submitted photographs or other data that can occur as a result of computer viruses, server or internet related problems, etc. Also please be notified that in case of such problems the photo contest may be suspended or canceled.  In the event that entries are not sufficient to select twelve (12) photographs of the quality required to produce a calendar to the contest organizer’s specifications, the organizer reserves the right to cancel the contest without declaring any winners.  This right shall also be exercised in the event that circumstances occur beyond the organizer’s control that would warrant such action, including but not limited to, insufficient corporate sponsorship and lack of qualified judges.

 

Contest rules may be modified at the organizer’s discretion.  If modifications occur, they will be posted on this web site.

 

All entries must be submitted electronically at www.subr.edu/asce by October 15, 2005.  Late entries will not be considered.  Winners will be notified by email on or before November 15, 2005.
