The
Division of Family and Consumer Sciences is one of the
land-grant arms of Southern University. True to the land-grant
philosophy, the Division engages higher education in addressing
the challenges of contemporary society. The Division of
Family and Consumer Sciences consists of three programs
– Apparel Merchandising and Textiles, Child Development,
and Human Nutrition and Food (Dietetics and Food Science
& Management).
The
mission of the Division is to improve the well being of
individuals, families and communities through quality
teaching; scholarly activity that is relevant to the needs
of the state’s constituents and the nation; and
outreach locally, nationally, and globally. The Division
uses an integrative approach to teaching, research and
service to accomplish its mission.
The
goals of the Division are:
· To enhance recruitment, retention and graduation
rate of students.
· To develop and maintain high quality programs
that prepare students to make significant contributions
to the family and consumer sciences profession.
· To enhance and promote the Division’s research,
creative and scholarly pursuits.
· To enhance and promote the Division’s outreach
and public service programs.
· To enhance, promote and implement a comprehensive,
effective, and efficient management infrastructure within
the Division.
· To enhance, improve and renovate the physical
infrastructure for effective and efficient teaching and
research activities.
The
family is the central focus of the discipline along with
a commitment to improving the human condition. Subject
matter areas include food, nutrition, human growth and
development, textiles, apparel, merchandising, management,
family relationships, and consumer education. The curriculum
provides a general education component and a common body
of knowledge in family and consumer sciences. Each area
of specialization requires an internship, practicum, or
field experience, designed to provide pre-professional,
on-the-job experiences for students. Research and public
service activities of the Division serve to support and
supplement the instructional program.
Students
are afforded the opportunity to develop their leadership
skills by becoming a part of one of the student organizations
in the Division. These include the American Association
of Family and Consumer Sciences—Preprofessional,
Designers of Tomorrow, the Child Development Club, and
the Student Dietetic Association. Phi Upsilon Omicron
is the National Honor Society for students in Family and
Consumer Sciences. The Family and Consumer Sciences Leadership
Council consists of six members who serve as ambassadors
for the Division.
