Lady Jaguars take third consecutive SWAC tennis championship

The Southern University Lady Jaguars tennis team claimed its third consecutive SWAC Championship with a convincing 4-0 win over Alcorn State University April 21 in Alexandria.

Southern’s win earned the Jaguars the conference's automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament May 17-28.

Senior No. 1 Carlista Mohammed was named the tournament's most valuable player after finishing undefeated in singles and in doubles play in the Jaguars' wins over the Braves and Prairie View A&M.

Southern head coach Jeff Conyers was named the 2012 SWAC Coach of the Year. Sunday's win marks the sixth SWAC Championship for Southern under head tennis coach Jeff Conyers. Conyers, who is also a member of the NCAA Division Men's and Women's Tennis Committee, led the Lady Jaguars to its third straight HBCU Tennis national title this past fall.
