College of Ed earns NCATE's 'Nationally Recognized' status

Southern University's College of Education has received notice from the National Council for Teacher Education that its Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership has earned the "Nationally Recognized" designation, the highest ranking that NCATE awards programs in its jurisdiction.

NCATE is a non-profit, non-governmental alliance that accredits 632 colleges of education across the country. The "Nationally Recognized" designation is based upon NCATE's evaluation of the program's performance over the last three-year period.

All seven standards set by NCATE were met without conditions. This is rare, since some may have required clarification even at a nationally recognized level. The report cited strong evidence of candidate knowledge of content, pedagogical and professional knowledge, and capacity to affect student learning.

The report concluded that the university effectively uses assessment results to guide the improvement of the program.

Dr. Roy L. Jacobs, the late chair of the department, is credited with being a pivotal player in the success of the findings. Jacobs died earlier this summer.

Dr. VerJanis A. Peoples, dean of the College of Education, said, "Dr. Jacobs' vision, commitment, and consistent action lead to this signal accomplishment. Dr. Jacobs routinely told me that we were going to achieve this standard. His focus never moved from the goal he set for himself, his faculty, and his students. It is this commitment which will continue to give Southern the capacity to be the leader in educational accomplishments in Louisiana."
