SU students perform clean-up in Scotlandville area

Miss Southern University Erin Rogers and Student Government Association President Willie McCorkle led dozens of SU students in a clean-up effort Saturday in the Scotlandville community.

Rogers helped rake grass and pick up trash along Scenic Highway and Godchaux Street. McCorkle, a self-proclaimed "city boy," was on a riding lawnmower cutting and raking grass, also at a lot on Godchaux.

Students representing Greek-lettered organizations and athletics also helped with cleanup activities at Scotlandville High and Ryan Elementary.

The student groups that participated in the cleanup effort included:

  • Jag University Ambassadors (coordinators)
  • The Office of Student Orientation/Outreach & Leadership
  • Development (S.O.L.D.)- coordinated event with the Mayor's
  • Love Your Block initiative
  • First yr students class of 2016
  • Student Government Association
  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
  • Omega Psi Phi
  • Phi Beta Sigma
  • SU Football Team
  • Delta Sigma Theta
  • SU Marching Band
  • Residential Life Assistants
  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

The effort was part of a partnership with the Mayor Kip Holden's "Love Your Block" initiative. The community service event was one of several activities of SU's Welcome Week.
