Southern University’s Counseling Center gets re-accredited

Southern University’s University Counseling Center has been re-accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc.

The UCC has been accredited by IACS since 2001. Dr. ValaRay J. Irvin is director of the Center.

According to the IACS, the center was evaluated based on high standards of counseling practice and found to offer competent and reliable professional services to its clientele. Approval by the IACS is also dependent upon evidence of continuing professional developments as well as demonstration of excellence of counseling performance.

The counseling center provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, and outreach and consultation to the campus community. UCC also offers services to all SUBR students, full or part-time, and offers courtesy assessment to faculty and staff.

The UCC is sponsored by the Title III Program and reports to the Division of Students Affairs.

IACS, an Alexandria, Va.-based organization of the United States, Canadian and Australian counseling agencies, was established in 1972 to encourage and aid counseling agencies to meet high professional standards through peer evaluation and to inform the public about counseling services that are competent and reliable.
