Southern University students and faculty, especially Mass Communication and Political Science students, will get a behind the scene’s view of politics when they get to listen and pose questions to Bryan Monroe, editor of


Monroe will be at Southern from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday, March 18, in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union.


Monroe is a Nieman Fellow, former editor and news executive with Knight-Ridder, a former vice president and editorial director of Ebony and Jet magazines and a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists.


He led Knight-Ridder’s efforts during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, helping the staff of the newspaper in Biloxi, Miss., publish continuously throughout the storm and aftermath. His and the team’s efforts were awarded the 2006 Pulitzer Prize Gold Model for Public Service.


Monroe will be speaking at Baton Rouge Community College from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 18 in the Magnolia Performing Arts Theater and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday March 19 at LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication.
