La. Black HOF to induct legendary SU Band Director Dr. Isaac Greggs

SU's former Marching Band Director Isaac Greggs will be inducted into the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame at a ceremony scheduled Saturday, June 22, in Baton Rouge.

The 'Torches of Life Award' Induction Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Family Life Center, 9700 Scenic Highway.

Greggs, an icon among college marching band directors, headed Southern's "Human Jukebox" for 36 years before retiring in 2005.

Tickets are $25.

Proceeds will be used to help fund the Black History Hall of Fame exhibition room at the Lincoln Theater, a historical landmark in old South Baton Rouge which was purchased by the Black History Hall of Fame. The Lincoln Theater, opened in 1949, has showcased African-American performers and African-American films and served as a business and community center before it closed in 2009.

Organizers are trying to raise $500,000 to match the $500,000 that has been donated.

For more information, call (225) 270-1741 or go to www. Lincolntheaterbr.com. Tickets can also be purchased locally at Burning Sands International, 7724 Plank Road.
