Group to offer scholarship for the late Dr. DeWitt Jones

Friends and church members of the late Southern University administrator Dr. DeWitt Jones have begun raising funds for a scholarship that will be presented to an SU student in Jones’ honor.

Jones, the former dean of the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences, died in June of 2011.

“He was dedicated to Southern University throughout his career and he was a mainstay of our church,” said the Rev. Dr. Herman O. Kelly, Jr., pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Baton Rouge, who is heading the scholarship drive. Jones was a trustee and treasurer at Bethel.

Kelly said church members  have made donations and they are receiving donations from outside sources also. The church plans to award the scholarship to a Southern student for the fall 2013 semester.

To qualify, students must be: fulltime; enrolled in one of the majors under the umbrella of the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences; and have at least a 2.5 GPA at the time their application is submitted. Applications should be emailed to: brbethel@att.net.

If you want to make a contribution, please send a check or money order made out to the Southern University Foundation. In the memo section of the check include The DeWitt Jones Memorial Scholarship. Address check to the Southern University Foundation, P.O. Box 9562, at Baton Rouge, La., 70813.
