Southern University's "Human Jukebox" Marching Band along with the College of Nursing and Allied Health are among the finalists for the 2014 HBCU awards sponsored by the national news website HBCU Digest.

Also among the 2014 HBCU finalists are former SU Quarterback Dray Joseph, the 2013 Jaguar Football team, SU faculty member Dr. Sung Chul No and Head Football Coach Dawson Odums.

HBCU Digest is billed as the "national news resource of record for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs)." The winners in various categories will be announced at the HBCU Digest's HBCU Awards event set for July 12 at Dillard University in New Orleans.

The Human Jukebox is among the finalists in the category of Best Marching Band. Other nominees include: Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South; Alabama State University's Mighty Marching Hornets; and North Carolina A&T State University's Blue and Gold Marching Machine.

The Human Jukebox, the winner of numerous national awards, was named by the NCAA as the nation's second best college marching band in the country in 2013.

The College of Nursing and Allied Health is a finalist in the category of Best Nursing Programs. SU's nursing program has been named the best nursing school in Louisiana twice in the past four years. Several of its faculty members have been cited by local and national nursing organizations for their work in various health-related fields.

Dr. No, a professor in the College of Business, is a finalist in the category of Male Faculty Member of the Year. No teaches economics and finances in the department. To be nominated in this category, the faculty member must have demonstrated volunteerism, along with mentoring or providing valuable leadership on and off campus.

Joseph, the quarterback of the Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jaguar football team, was named the SWAC's Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and finished his career as SU's all-time leader in passing yards.

The 2013 Jaguar football team is listed among the nominees for Men's Team of the Year. Lead by Joseph and wide receiver Lee Doss, the Jaguar football team finished first in SWAC's Western Division and won the conference championship by defeating Jackson State University 34-27 in a double overtime thriller in Houston's Reliant Stadium.

Odums is a finalist in the category of Male Coach of the Year. In his first full season as head coach of the Jaguars, Odums guided the team to wins in the Bayou Classic against Grambling State University and the SWAC championship.
