SU hosts major art exhibition-workshop by HBCU artists

Southern University, as part of its Centennial Celebration on the Baton Rouge campus, is hosting one of the largest exhibitions of art from historically black colleges and universities from around the country.

The art is part of the National Alliance of Artists from HBCUs Annual Conference and Juried Exhibition set for the Baton Rouge campus through October 30. The conference's title is "The Importance of Art to HBCUs in This New Millennium."

Thirty visual artists from Southern and 23 other HBCUs will participate in the event that will feature paintings, original prints, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media and collages. The artist will also participate in workshops, lectures and tours of the campus and city.

Some of the other colleges and universities, include Dillard University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Southern University-New Orleans, Tuskegee University, Prairie View A&M University, Alabama State University and North Carolina A&T University.

There will be a reception, Friday, September 5, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery in Frank Hayden Hall. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition, curated by SU Associate Professor Randell Henry, will run through October 30.

Community Coffee Frank Hayden Endowed Professor Addie Dawson-Euba organized the exhibition to bring some of the best art by African-American Artists in the U.S. to the Baton Rouge campus.

The gallery is opened Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment on Fridays.
