3/20/2015

Six Southern University students claimed medals, including two for first place, at the recent National Association of Teachers of Singing vocal competition held last weekend in Hammond.

Southern's six medals were more than any other college at the event, said Music Professor Richard Hobson. Other schools at the competition held on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University, included Southeastern, LSU, Louisiana Tech, University of Louisiana - Lafayette, University of Louisiana - Monroe, Northwestern State University and Bossier Parish Community College.

Southern student winners and categories are: Briannica Thompson, from Monroe, won a first place in the Junior Women's category; Arthur Vermillion, from New Roads, claimed first place in the young student adult category; Nicholas Lockett, from New Orleans, place second in young student adult and Benny Brown received a third place in young student adult.

Lockett is a New Orleans native and Brown is from Charlotte, N.C.

Joshua Staes, from New Orleans, collected a second place in the men's division.

All of the students receive a nominal scholarship award, Hopson said.

"I am very proud of these students and even surprised by some of them," Hobson said. "I think they let people know that we still have a great music department and great students."
