André Spears among students honored by Education Testing Service

Congratulations to SU physics major André Spears, one of eight 2014-15 ETS Presidential Scholarship recipients, to make presentations recently at an event sponsored by the Princeton, N.J. based company.

Spears' presentation showed that he "has received an excellent education at Southern," according to a letter from ETS (Educational Testing Service) to Acting Chancellor Flandus McClinton.

Spears, as did the other recipients, made presentations about their field of study. "Andre made an outstanding presentation titled 'Investigating the Interactions of Competing Absorbates on Pt Catalysts Using Electrochemical Techniques' which was very well received," the ETS letter said.

The letter went on to say, "It was very clear from the depth of knowledge and the skill at presenting his subject that André has received an excellent education at Southern."

Spears presentation was made to ETS staff, area high school seniors preparing for college and ETS President and CEO Walt MacDonald.

"You would be proud of how well André represented Southern University and A&M College...," the letter said.

While at the ETS event, the recipients met privately with MacDonald and were honored during an awards ceremony and dinner.

The ETS scholarships recognize rising juniors and seniors who have established a record of outstanding academic performance, both overall and in their major field. Their college president or chancellor must also recommend them.
Spears met all criteria with a 3.5 grade point average while being involved in co-curricular activities such as research, internships and volunteerism. The awards are merit-based full-tuition scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Kenner native has participated a 10-week internship sponsored by the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory, in Los Alamos, N.M. He conducted fuel cell research in the Materials Physics and Applications Group at Los Alamos.
