Program Overview

Choose Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a field of study and a profession that applies the fundamental principles of science and mathematics to the design of (1) public works - roads, bridges, water and energy systems; (2) public facilities - ports, railways, and airports; and (3) infrastructure that support the everyday aspects of our lives - drinking water, wastewater, parks, church and school buildings, and waterways, lakes and bayous.

Civil Engineers design, construct, supervise, operate, and maintain large construction projects and systems - including roads, airports, buildings, tunnels, bridges, dams, water supply systems, and sewage treatment systems.

While civil engineers enjoy the comforts of indoor offices, a significant amount of time may be spent in the freedom of outdoors.  These traditional civil engineering sites are truly where the practice is honed - where the proverbial rubber meets the road - solving problems at the point of origin of project and construction sites that involve design, construction, monitoring, assessment, etc.

Choose Southern University

Southern University and the Southern University College of Engineering and Computer Science are known and respected across the United States and enjoy an international reputation of success and achievement.  Our College of Engineering is one of the most prestigious engineering programs in the nation and one of the top producers of engineering graduates of color.

The College of Engineering is housed in the multi-million dollar facility named after the first Black governor of Louisiana, P. B. S. Pinchback.  Multimedia classrooms and cutting edge environmental, water resources, geotechnical, structures, and transportation teaching and research laboratories ensure every student will have the opportunity to become a truly exceptional civil engineering professional.

At Southern University, get ready to become great  ... a great scholar  ... a great professional ... a great citizen!  Southern University alumni and graduates of our civil engineering program become United States Ambassadors; hold Cabinet-level positions in government; own engineering and architecture firms; manage food, beverage, and consumer products plants; lead domestic and international projects and organizations, including businesses, churches, universities, and military units; litigate and adjudicate the cases that define a nation and her history; and contribute to the future of STEM achievements in roles at national laboratories and national science foundations and academies.

Civil Engineering at Southern University

The Southern University's civil engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.  http://www.abet.org  The successful completion of 128 prescribed credit hours lead to a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering.

Our civil engineering program provides students with a broad-based meaningful engineering education experience complemented by courses in arts and humanities, social sciences, English, economics, and basic sciences.  We provide exemplary training in applying fundamental civil engineering principles in the analysis, design, and maintenance of public and private systems.  Our curriculum encourages ethical and professional responsibility as well as lifelong learning as keys to professional and personal growth and development.

A civil engineering education at Southern University will prepare you for success across the breadth of the discipline:

  • Transportation Engineering - roads and highways, rails, air, ports, waterways, mass transit
  • Structural Engineering - bridges, buildings, towers, infrastructure
  • Environmental Engineering - water quality, treatment, and distribution; wastewater quality, treatment, and conveyance; contaminant fate and transport; solid, hazardous, and nuclear waste; air quality and treatment; remediation
  • Water Resources Engineering - dams, levees, reservoirs, spillways, flood control, aquifers
  • Geotechnical Engineering - foundations, embankments, soils classification and assessment
  • Construction Engineering - design, construction, project management, scheduling, estimating, budgets and finance
  • Urban Planning - land use development, geographic information systems
