Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

POST-MASTER'S DNP ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

The minimum requirements needed for application review and the required documents are listed below:

1.     Academic Preparation

A master's degree in a nursing specialty, as evidenced by transcript, and current certification as a  Nurse practitioner or "NP" who is an advanced practice registered nurse educated in a specified area of care and certified according to the requirements of a nationally recognized accrediting agency or a Certified nurse midwife or "CNM" who is an advanced practice registered nurse educated in the disciplines of nursing and midwifery and certified according to a nationally recognized certifying body.

2.     GPA

a) A minimum over-all cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale for courses counted toward the student's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master in Nursing (MN) degree, as indicated by official transcript is required for regular admission status.

3.     GRE

a) A satisfactory Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score taken within 5 years of the application. 

4.     Licensure

a) Evidence of a current unencumbered Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license with no restrictions.

5.     Years of Experience

a) Evidence of three (3) years of full-time APRN clinical practice experience as a certified NP or certified mid-wife within the past five (5) years.

6.     Computer Literacy

a) Evidence of computer literacy

 

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS:

In order for an application to be processed, the following documents must be submitted by the admission deadline:

 SUBR Application

Completed SUBR Application for Admission to a Graduate Degree Program.  The application packet can be downloaded from http:/www.subr.edu/gradschool.  

Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) letters of recommendation from:

a) a former faculty member in a graduate nursing program

(b) an employer or  advanced level professional in research , education, or leadership / administration who can attest to applicant's competencies and expertise as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

(c)  an individual of the applicant's choice who can attest to the applicant's character, level of integrity, professional traits, and the ability to successfully complete a doctorate in nursing practice program with academic excellence.

Official Transcripts

Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Evidence of Credentials and Certification

a. Evidence of current unencumbered Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) license with no restrictions

b. Evidence of national certification as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife

GRE

Official GRE Report (taken within 5 years of the application)

Statement of Interest

Submission of a 500-1000 word statement of interest that addresses the following:

a. Applicant's personal goals for doctoral study which are congruent with the DNP Program goals

b. Statement of how DNP education is important to the fulfillment of applicant's career goals

Curriculum Vitae / Resume

Submission of current curriculum vitae / resume which  includes dated employment history and clinical practice experience, honors, awards, professional memberships, and scholarly works (such as grants, publications, and presentations)

Sample of Scholarly Writing

Scholarly writing sample in health care or nursing research, including any publications or research.

Interview

An interview of the applicant

Fall Semester................................May 1

Spring Semester............................November 1

Summer Semester..........................April 1

 

 THE REVIEW AND NOTIFICATION PROCESS:

Once the SUBR Graduate School receives the application packet and all of the required materials, it is forwarded to the School of Nursing Graduate Nursing Program Admissions Committee for review.  The Graduate Nursing Program Admissions Committee reviews the applicant's file and renders the admissions recommendation to the Chair of the Graduate Nursing Program and the Dean of the School of Nursing.   Each applicant is notified by the Graduate School and the School of Nursing regarding the admissions decision.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation is based on satisfactory completion of all course work in an approved program of study and the student must meet all graduation requirements of the  university.  The minimum grade point average (GPA) required  for graduation is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
