DOLORES MARGARET RICHARD SPIKES
HONORS COLLEGE

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in Southern University and A&M College.  The selection of a college is one of the most important life decisions that you will make.  I encourage you to consider Southern University and A&M College for the next phase in your academic career.  The University’s goal is to prepare students to compete globally in their respective professions and to engage in advanced study in graduate and professional schools.  Southern University and A&M College has a rich and storied legacy of graduating students who enter the world of work or who attend graduate and professional schools.

Southern University in Baton Rouge (SUBR) is one of five campuses in the only historically black land-grant system in the United States.  Approximately 7,500 students are enrolled each year on the Baton Rouge campus.  The University offers 43 bachelor’s, 19 master’s and 5 doctoral degree programs.

The Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College, at Southern University and A&M College, is home to some of the most outstanding students at the University – high achievers, student leaders, talented musicians, budding poets and authors, emerging scientists and engineers, and future physicians and lawyers.  The Honors College provides an enhanced educational experience for students who have a history of strong academic achievement and motivation, and who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and talent.  Honors College students are challenged and nurtured through the use of innovative pedagogy, flexible and competitive curricula, and mentoring relationships with distinguished faculty and scholars.  Graduates of the Honors College become primary targets for employment by national corporations and are prime candidates for admission to graduate and professional schools.  Class size, teacher/student ratio, library and computer facilities, living and learning residence programs, extracurricular activities, intercollegiate and intramural sports, study abroad programs and much more serve to further enhance our honors curricula.

Eligibility criteria for admission to the D. M. R. Spikes Honors College are spelled out in an accompanying document. They are available at our web site.  Transfer students with a maximum of 36 earned college credit hours or demonstrated research accomplishments and a GPA of 3.30/4.00 can also be considered for membership.

Included, you will find an application for admission to the Honors College, recommendation forms, and the eligibility criteria.  Separate applications are required for the Honors College and the University.  The Southern University and A&M College undergraduate application and other needed forms (immunization and housing forms) can be obtained through the Office of Admissions.

We welcome you and your parents to visit our campus and College and to meet with us.

Sincerely,

Diola Bagayoko, Ph.D., SU System Distinguished Professor of Physics and Dean
