Master in Educational Leadership
The program is designed to produce leaders to fill school and district educational leadership positions (e.g. assistant principal, principal, parish or city supervisor of instruction, supervisor of childwelfare and attendance, special education supervisor, or comparable school/district leader positions). As a part of the educational leadership structure, there is an option for a teacher to become certified as a teacher leader (see advisor).
The recruitment and selection process is designed to select the best possible candidates for the program. In order to accomplish this goal, a district Selection and Review Team will be established in each participating school district. These teams will be charged with the responsibility of advertising, recruiting and selecting candidates who demonstrate leadership skills and abilities that parallel Educational Leadership Constituent Council standards (ELCC), Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) Critical Success Factors and the Louisiana Standards for School Principals.
Internship and Graduation Requirements
Internship is a critical component of the program. Candidates must complete 200 hours of course-based field experiences. Candidates enrolled in EDLD 595 (Internship) must complete an additional 180 hours of field experiences prior to completion of program. Residency is optional for candidates in the program (see advisor). Graduation requirements include attainment of 3.0 GPA and a passing score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA).
- Candidates will provide evidence of potential leadership abilities and skills and are accepted into the graduate School. This portal consists of admissions data, such as GRE, GPA and a copy of the teaching certificate.
- Other criteria needed to assist in the identification of potentially successful leaders are: Resume, Philosophy of Education, transcripts, statement of personal goals, and candidate interview.
Four letters of recommendation: Letter of support from the principal, supervisor, community representative, and professional colleague.
- Candidates that do not meet all of the above requirements may be admitted to the program on a provisional or conditional status.
Criteria Screening for Potential Candidates (Interview)
1. Planning and Organizing - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to establish a course of action for self and/or others to accomplish a specific goal.
2. Oral and Written Communication/Presentation - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to clearly present own ideas, other's ideas and information in an open and genuine way. Applicants will make a 5-10 minute PowerPoint presentation on their qualifications, philosophy of education, portfolio, and community activities.
3. Data Analysis - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to identify different types and sources of data, analyze data, and interpret data to help the school community understand it and use it toward school improvement.
4. Collaboration and Team Work - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively with the school community to achieve school goals.
5. Leadership - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to know when to utilize appropriate interpersonal styles and methods in guiding individuals and/or groups toward task accomplishment.
6. Problem Solving/Decisions - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to solve real life school problems, render judgments and take action.
7. Technology Competency - the candidate has demonstrated the ability to use technology based programs and applications.
