Welcome to the Department of Foreign Languages at Southern University-Baton Rouge!
As part of the College of Arts and Humanities, the Department of Foreign Languages plays a vital role in the liberal arts curriculum of Southern University. We offer beginning and intermediate courses in French, Spanish, German, and Chinese within the general education programs of the College and of the University.
The Department offers students the opportunity to minor and persue a concentartion study in French and Spanih. Our programs are designed to prepare students to think and live in a multicultural world by guiding them to think critically, communicate effectively, and expand their understanding of and appreciation for other cultures. Consequently, our programs offer students a solid preparation for a wide variety of careers, which is in itself a valuable asset for the future. Our graduates have gone on to careers in teaching, law, and international business, among others.
The Department has seven full-time and one two-time faculty member, an assistant of the Language Learning Laboratories, and two FLTA students. The faculty in the Department of Foreign Languages are dedicated to students and to the teaching mission of the Department. Research and scholarship are, of course, important for effective teaching and integral components of the University's mission; our faculty members have authored books, chapters, journal articles, and book reviews in their areas of expertise. In addition, many of our faculty members are directly involved in activities which orient our students, those from area schools, and community citizens to the benefits of language and culture studies. We hold summer camps for school students in French and Spanish, and we recently started "Encuentros", a community conversation hour for speakers of Spanish and English.
The Department is the home of Beta Sigma Chapter, Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate foreign language honor society. It is also the home of the "Jaguares latiinos"(Spanish Club) and the newly-formed French Club, "La Connexion Française.
Our staff are valuable and dedicated members of the Department of Foreign Languages. They are always willing to assist students, faculty, and visitors.
