Welcome to the Department of World Languages at Southern University!

As part of the College of Education, Arts and Humanities, the Department of World Languages plays a vital role in the liberal arts curriculum of Southern University. We offer beginning and intermediate courses in French, Spanish, German, and Chinese within the general education programs of the College and of the University.

The Department offers students the opportunity to minor and pursue a concentration of study in French and Spanish. Our programs are designed to prepare students to think and live in a multicultural world by guiding them to think critically, communicate effectively, and expand their understanding of and appreciation for other cultures. Consequently, our programs offer students a solid preparation for a wide variety of careers, which is in itself a valuable asset for the future. Our graduates have gone on to careers in teaching, law, and international business, among others.

World languages has three full-time and several part-time faculty members, an assistant in the Language Learning Laboratories, and two FLTA students. The faculty of World Languages is dedicated to students and to the teaching mission of the Department. Research and scholarship are, of course, important for effective teaching and integral components of the University's mission; our faculty members have authored books, chapters, journal articles, and book reviews in their areas of expertise. In addition, many of our faculty members are directly involved in activities which orient our students, those from area schools, and community citizens to the benefits of language and culture studies. We hold summer camps for school students in French and Spanish, and we recently started "Encuentros," a community conversation hour for speakers of Spanish and English.

World Languages is the home of Beta Sigma Chapter, Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate world language honor society. It is also the home of the "Jaguares Latinos" (Spanish Club) and the newly-formed French Club, "La Connexion Française".

We have valuable and dedicated staff members in World Languages. They are always willing to assist students, faculty, and visitors.

As we hope you can see from this brief description, ours is a vital and active area, and we hope you will browse through our web pages; meet our faculty and staff; see the catalog descriptions of our courses; learn about studying beyond our borders through the National Student Exchange Program; abroad program in Orizaba, Mexico; learn about studying beyond our borders through the National Student Exchange Program; review our educational options; get acquainted with our Foreign Language Laboratory, and much more!
