Admission and Retention

Students are admitted into the mass communication program only after they have completed all of the following University College requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.00;
  • Completion of English 110 and English 111 with a grade of "C" or better;
  • Completion of at least 30 semester hours; and
  • Completion of all reading courses with a "C" or better.
  • Passing university writing proficiency

To be retained as a major in mass communication, all students accepted into the program must pass News Writing (MCOM211) with at least a grade of "C." News Writing is the basic writing course, and is a prerequisite for all 300- 400- level courses in the department.

If a student's GPA drops below a 2.0, he/she will be placed on probation for one semester. If the student does not bring up the GPA to 2.0 within that semester, the student will be suspended from taking classes in the department except for those in which the student failed or received a grade of "D."

To graduate as a mass communication major, a student must:

Complete 120 semester hours with a grade- point average of at least 2.0 (No credit is given for "D" grades in mass communication courses)

Note: It is an essential requirement for graduation that each student in Mass Communication satisfactorily complete at least 90 credit hours outside the department, of which a minimum of 65 hours must be earned in the liberal arts and sciences.


Colloquium

Throughout the fall and spring semesters, mass communication students will be required to attend three one-hour colloquia in the fourth week, eighth week and twelfth week of each semester.
