Freshman Studies Course Offerings

FRMN 000. Mentoring. (credit, 0 hrs).  This course is designed to assist students in developing stronger learning strategies to experience academic success.  It emphasizes study skills, time management, and other topics that will help students identify their needs and find specific courses of action that will lead to better grades.

 

FRMN 006. Academy Assembly (Credit 0 hrs).  The Academy Assembly provides an opportunity for the students, professors and staff to collaborate on research, classroom issues, and the  personal/social development of Academy students.

 

FRMN 110. Freshman Seminar (Credit, 1 hrs).  This course provides the student with an opportunity to make a smooth transition from high school to college life and helps the student acquire effective study strategies, stimulate critical and creative thinking skills, learn how to learn (learning styles), practice oral and written skills, establish short and long-term goals, become a skilled user of academic resources, learn test taking strategies, focus on good academic planning, and learn to manage time efficiently.

 

FRMN 111. Freshman Seminar (Credit, 1 hour). This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about their major field of study and the professional behavior essential to their chosen careers.  It focuses on building knowledge in career planning, developing a global philosophic view of work, decision making and charting the future.  Students are offered the opportunity to examine careers, interests, abilities, self and goals.

 

FRMN 115.  Freshman Reading (Credit, 3 hours).  This course is designed to help students develop effective reading and clear thinking skills (cognitive, evaluative, analysis, synthesis, etc.) that meet the demands for college level reading skills in all academic disciplines.

 

FRMN 116.  Collaborative Learning Laboratory (Credit, 0 hrs).  This course provides students the opportunity to practice the utilization of collaborative learning as a strategy for mastery of the rigor of college work. It provides structure, interactive learning, and student-centered learning techniques.  The course involves students and faculty collaborating, students networking with other students, and students meeting designated learning outcomes.

 

UCOL 205.  Critical Thinking and Analytical Reasoning (Credit, 3 hours).  This course is a formal approach to developing thinking skills (cognitive, evaluative, analysis, synthesis, etc.) that are key components of learning, especially learning from written material. The course enhances student's ability to identify and assess arguments systematically and rigorously, as well as improves their critical thinking skills in all of the academic areas. It is an introduction to identifying structures, hidden assumptions of arguments, and various types of argumentative fallacies (mistakes in reasoning).
