Reasons for giving
It is a daunting task for an HBCU to undertake efforts to realize internationalization. However, at Southern University we have the courage to take the necessary steps. It is our firm belief that we can achieve success and sustain our impetus through contributions from private and public sources, including SUBR alumni and general supporters. Your support is a key factor to the success of our students and to the strength of our international initiatives. It is our sincere hope that you will recognize the merits of international education for our campus and help us make a difference in the quality of education provided by Southern University.
“Since 1995, Southern University at Baton Rouge has formed partnerships with international institutions of higher education to provide study abroad experiences for students and faculty development opportunities for its faculty. These initiatives should be cultivated and supported. We appreciate your tax deductible contributions.”

International programs you will support
-
Study abroad scholarships – Our study abroad programs in Mexico, Africa, China, and Nicaragua offer students the opportunity to travel abroad and experience new languages and cultures through academic study, service-learning, home-stay, internships, cultural excursions, and personal growth. Studying abroad is a life-changing experience that helps expand a student’s understanding of global issues, acquire second language proficiency, shapes character, stimulates international career interest, and furthers personal and professional maturity. Most students want to study abroad, but their financial resources make it almost impossible. Your contribution will indeed make a difference.
-
International conferences – Bringing international conferences to the Baton Rouge campus will provide opportunities to engage issues of global interests, attract national and international visitors, contribute to building an international climate on campus, and showcase the international capabilities of our faculty. The presence of international speakers will enable faculty and students to interact, learn, explore, and dialogue about research interests. Your unlimited support will help in our efforts to create this international environment on campus.
-
Diplomat-in-residence program – Our goal is to bring in at least one diplomat-in-residence per year. Your support will allow Southern University to introduce world professionals to the campus who will offer unique perspectives about global affairs. These opportunities will also offer deeper intellectual experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the community-at-large. Diplomats-in-residence engage in teaching, research and outreach on issues related to international public affairs. The program motivates students from all levels to think about career opportunities in international studies and foreign affairs.
