Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology is located in the College of Sciences at Southern University. All students are expected to follow and abide by University and College rules and procedures as well as standards set by the department. University and College rules and procedures are detailed in the university catalog and in the Code of Student Conduct Manual.

Organized in the mid-1950s, the Department of Sociology offers courses designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for rewarding and responsible careers in sociology and related areas of study.

The mission of the Sociology Department is to provide quality instruction to all of its majors and non-majors, so that they are well-prepared academically, to compete in educational institutions and in marketplaces, locally, nationally and globally.

The faculty is made up of seven (7) full-time faculty members, all of whom are terminal degree holders, and one part-time faculty member who has a law degree. Scholarly productivity among the faculty members is generally at a level commensurate with significantly heavy teaching, advising, and counseling activities. In spite of such time consuming activities, each faculty member conducts research, presents and/or publishes at least one paper per year.
