Compass/ESL Examination

The Compass/ESL Examination

The COMPASS is a Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) offered by the ACT, Inc. It is designed to test a student's ability to learn.  The goal of the COMPASS test is to use a standardized teaching process to create an objective assessment of a test taker's knowledge and skills.  The University uses the test to quickly evaluate potential students' skill levels in English and Mathematics based on the test scores set by the Louisiana Board of Regents.  A passing score on the COMPASS will allow students to enroll in a four-year college or university who have ACT scores in English 17 and Mathematics 18.  These ACT scores places students in two developmental education courses.  At present, a student needs to pass one of the COMPASS test to enroll at Southern University, Fall 2012-2014.
