Area 8 Drill Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. – Every spring semester, Southern University's Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) hosts a regional drill competition that will determine which high school JROTC unit will attend the national competition. On the morning of February 24th, high schools from northwest Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, southeastern Texas, and our very own state of Louisiana will arrive at A.W. Mumford Stadium, located on Southern University’s campus, to put forth their best efforts in drill competitions, physical fitness events, and academic testing. Events include color guard drill, platoon drill, exhibition drill, and athletic events.

Upon arrival, each unit will form up on the pre-staged “drill deck” to participate in a rigorous personnel inspection. Navy midshipmen will judge the overall appearance of a unit, inspect individual uniforms, and test cadets with on-the-spot general military questions. From there, each unit will take part in various drill events including armed and unarmed basic drill, color guard, tandem drill, and armed and unarmed expedition drill.

During these drill events, cadets will be evaluated on their coordination, muscle memory, and memorization of routine. These are not the only challenges these cadets will face during Area 8. These high school students will be also be challenged mentally as they are placed in classrooms located in Pinchback Hall, Southern University’s engineering building, in which academic testing will take place – a 50-question military knowledge test. Lastly, these students will be challenged physically by performing a 1-mile relay, a 1600-yard relay, sit-ups, push-ups, and a tug-of-war. Each time a JROTC unit finishes an event, their score sheet will be taken to the score booth where professional staff members and midshipmen will work together to ensure accurate scoring of each competing high school. From these scores, we will ultimately determine the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place overall winners. On February 24th, we will welcome the attending high schools to determine the top competitor of the Area 8 Drill Meet.
