Research Supplements to Promote Re-Entry into Biomedical and Behavioral
Research Careers
Brief
Description: The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH),
participating Institutes and Centers (ICs) of the National Institutes
of Health (NIH), and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) announce
a continuing program for administrative supplements to research
grants. The grants will support individuals with high potential
to re-enter an active research career after a qualifying interruption
for family or other responsibilities.
Proposed
Funding: The requested salary and fringe benefits for a re-entry
candidate must be in accordance with the salary structure of the
grantee institution, consistent with the level of effort. An additional
amount up to $10,000 may be requested for supplies, domestic travel,
and publication costs relevant to the proposed research. Equipment
may not be purchased as a part of this supplement without justification
and specific prior approval of the NIH.

Brief
Description: The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's
(SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate
students a unique opportunity to gain exposure and experience in
a research environment. The program enables students to work on
specific projects under the direction of the Center's professional
staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit
to each participant.
Students applying to the program have the option of selecting an
internship project from the following categories: Global Change,
Landscape Ecology, Ecology of Coastal Ecosystems, Population and
Community Ecology, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental
and Ecology Education. Students will become familiar with much of
the research being conducted at SERC, but they will devote most
of their time to a project and content area of particular interest
to them. In addition to their research, students participate in
field trips, seminars, lectures, and an intern open house. All participants
are expected to integrate what they have learned during their experience
and present a brief seminar at the end of their stay.
Proposed Funding: Term: 10 to 16 weeks, Stipend: $400/wk

Freer Gallery of Art
Brief
Description: The Freer Gallery of Art, along with its sister
museum, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, are the national museums
of Asian art at the Smithsonian Institution and are jointly administered.
The Freer Gallery of Art houses one of the most distinguished collections
of Asian art in the world today, as well as the largest collection
of work by James McNeill Whistler. The Gallery supports advanced
research and disseminates the results through exhibitions and publications.
Internships are available to high school, undergraduate, and graduate
students for special projects and general departmental work in the
following departments. Administration, Collections Management (Registrar),
Conservation and Scientific Research, Curatorial, Design and Installation,
Development, Education (including public programs), Library and
Archives, Publications, Photography, Public Affairs, and Shops.
A working knowledge of pertinent Asian languages is suggested for
curatorial internships.

Title:
Architectural History and Historic Preservation (AHHP)
Brief
Description: Architectural History and Historic Preservation
(AHHP), Office of the Facilities, Engineering and Operations, offers
internships for the study of the history and preservation of the
Smithsonian buildings. The Smithsonian buildings vary in date and
style from the Patent Office Building (housing the Museum of American
Art and the National Portrait Gallery) of 1839 to the National Museum
of the American Indian now under construction. While they vary greatly
in style and date, the Smithsonian buildings share a common program
creating a unique complex of American public buildings. An internship
in the AHHP office is a prearranged, structured learning experience
under the guidance of the Director. This internship program is provided
for both undergraduates and graduate students. Some previous coursework
or experience in art history, architectural history or historic
preservation is required.

Extended Area Protection and Survivability Architecture Study

Description: The Architecture developed in this study will provide
a detailed
engineering definition of the system and technologies required to
eliminate those gaps and shortfalls and satisfy the stated Army
need. It is the Governments intent to issue multiple Cost Plus Fixed
Fee contract awards for this study to those domestic corporations
that can demonstrate experience in definition, development, and
lead system integration for fielded Army tactical weapon systems
and that provide a clear understanding and a cost-effective approach
to the requirements of the Statement of Work. Only one proposal
per company
will be considered.
Proposed
Funding: The expected funding profile per award is $40k (baseline),
$160k (option 1), $200k (option 2), $200k (option 3), and $300k
(option 4); or more depending upon funding availability.

Deadlines: The period of performance of the contract is estimated
from Jan 2005 through Dec 2009, utilizing a basic 12 month effort
and four 12-month option periods.
