Diet-Induced Changes in Inflammation as Determinants of Colon Cancer
(R21)
Brief
Description: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) encourages
the submission of grant applications focusing on research projects
that deal with the identification and characterization of diet-induced
changes in inflammation linked to colon cancer risks. This program
is designed to stimulate research efforts that will lead to the
identification and characterization of: (1) diet-induced changes
in anti - and pro-inflammatory mediators that modulate colon cancer
risks; (2) genetic polymorphisms that modify the responses to specific
bioactive food components with regard to colon cancer inhibition;
and (3) the physiological effectiveness of dietary components in
terms of concentration, activity, duration of exposure, degrees
of stability, chemical forms, and receptor-binding affinity in inflammatory
colonocytes. The NCI will not support applications that propose
epidemiological studies based on diet-related risks of colon cancer.
Proposed
Funding: The estimated total program ceiling amount is $200,000.00.

Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research
Brief Description: -The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hereby
notify Principal Investigators holding specific types of NIH research
grants, listed in the full Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)
that funds are available for administrative supplements to improve
the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting
students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from groups
that have been shown to be underrepresented. Although the administrative
supplements supported under this program provide funding for less
than one percent of all individuals involved in NIH supported research,
the NIH has found these awards to be an effective means of encouraging
institutions to recruit from currently underrepresented groups.
Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of
the original project. -All NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), the
NIH Common Fund, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety
(NIOSH, CDC) participate in this program. Candidates eligible for
support under this supplement program include individuals at various
career levels who come from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented
in science. Such candidates include individuals from underrepresented
racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals
from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Corps, in cooperation with the Corporation for National and Community
Service, is offering mini-grants to support service projects as
part of the 21st anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal
holiday (January 15, 2007). These mini-grants will support service
activities designed to alleviate conditions of poverty in communities
and engage disadvantaged youth. NASCC encourages its members and
outside organizations to apply for a mini-grant. NASCC will fund
organizations that mobilize volunteers, especially disadvantaged
youth, to undertake service activities to benefit impoverished communities.
NASCC service projects will: 1) Provide relief to a condition of
poverty through a service project; 2) Mobilize a diverse group of
volunteers with an emphasis on disadvantaged youth; 3) Develop new
and existing partnerships with community organizations who will
participate in the project; and 4) Provide educational and recruitment
materials to project volunteers and the community at large. NASCC
will provide grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 each. Grants can
be used to plan and carry out service activities directly related
to the proposed project. NASCC will accept applications on a rolling
basis. Applications will be considered and approved on a first-come,
first-served basis. NASCC's ability to provide mini-grants to applicants
is contingent upon funding from the Corporation for National and
Community Service. Visit the NASCC Web site for complete program
