Title:
Research to Aid Persons with Disabilities
Brief Description: The Research to Aid Persons with Disabilities
(RAPD) program supports research that will lead to the development
of new technologies, devices, or software for persons with disabilities.
Research may be supported that is directed to the characterization,
restoration, and/or substitution of human functional ability or
cognition, or to the interaction of persons with disabilities and
their environment. Areas of particular recent interest are disability-related
research in neuroscience/neuroengineering and rehabilitation robotics.
Emphasis is placed on significant advancement of fundamental engineering
and scientific knowledge and not on incremental improvements. Proposals
should advance discovery or innovation beyond the frontiers of current
knowledge in disability-related research. Applicants are encouraged
to contact a program director prior to submitting a proposal. Undergraduate
Engineering Design Projects are also supported, especially those
that provide prototype "custom-designed" devices or software
for persons with disabilities. The education of undergraduate engineering
students is enhanced through Undergraduate Engineering Design Projects'
awards supported by the RAPD program. Characteristics of undergraduate
engineering design projects to aid persons with disabilities include:
The primary goal of this activity is to provide a meaningful design
experience for the engineering student that will directly aid a
specific individual with a disability. Undergraduate student engineers
or engineering technology students develop prototype "custom-designed"
devices and software in this regard. The PI and the students work
with institutions providing care or education for individuals with
disabilities. The proposal must include a short description of ten
possible design projects. These projects should be suitable for
an undergraduate student, or a small team of students, to complete
in about one year. The proposal should include a letter of support
from an appropriate administrator of an institution providing care
or education to individuals with disabilities. The letter should
certify that the institution and the university will work cooperatively
on the design projects.

Title:
Major Research Instrumentation Program
Brief
Description: The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI)
serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments
for research and research training in our Nation's institutions
of higher education, museums and science centers, and non-profit
organizations. This program especially seeks to improve the quality
and expand the scope of research and research training in science
and engineering, by providing shared instrumentation that fosters
the integration of research and education in research-intensive
learning environments. Development and acquisition of research instrumentation
for shared inter- and/or intra-organization use is encouraged, as
are development efforts that leverage the strengths of private sector
partners as appropriate for the goals of the MRI Program. To accomplish
these goals, the MRI program assists with the acquisition or development
of shared research instrumentation that is, in general, too costly
and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. For
the purposes of the MRI Program, proposals must be for either acquisition
or development. Instruments are expected to be operational for regular
research use by the end of the award period. A key recommendation
of a 2006 National Academies report on “Advanced Research
Instrumentation and Facilities” (ARIF) was that the NSF
should expand the MRI program so that it includes “mid-scale”
instrumentation whose capital costs are greater than $2 million,
but with costs that are not appropriate for NSF’s Major
Research Equipment and Facilities Construction account. The MRI
program now accepts proposals requesting over $2 million in NSF
support (to the maximum request of $4 million) for the acquisition
of a single instrument. For proposals requesting $2 million or less,
investigators may seek support for instrument development or for
acquisition of a single instrument, a large system of instruments,
or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research
focus.

Brief
Description: -Purpose. The National Center for Research Resources
(NCRR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites applications
for competing continuation of Institutional Development Award (IDeA)
Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) grants to independent
biomedical research institutes and/or biomedical research institutions
that award doctoral degrees in the health sciences or sciences related
to health within IDeA-eligible states. INBRE applications must represent
a collaborative effort to sponsor research with undergraduate institutions,
community colleges, and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs).
The size, structure, and operational principles of the INBRE networks
have been established during previous INBRE and the planning phase
of INBRE project periods. The competitive renewal application should

Title: Collaborative R01s for Clinical and Services Studies
of Mental Disorders and AIDS (CSMD)
Brief
Description: The sponsors offer support for collaborative intervention
trials in the treatment, prevention or rehabilitation of those with
mental disorders and alcohol use disorders and comorbid mental disorders.
Support is also sought for other collaborative clinical studies,
including but not limited to mental health services research, AIDS,
genetics, psychopathology, stigma, and cultural and social processes.
This initiative should be used when two or more sites are needed
to complete the study. The collaborating studies share a specific
protocol across the sites and are organized as such in order to
increase sample size, accelerate recruitment, or increase sample
diversity and representation. In studies with a large number of
sites, it is expected that one site will be submitted as coordinating
site for data management and/or other centralized administration.
This initiative also supports projects involving collaboration between
community-based organizations such as consumer or advocacy groups,
state or local governments, and Tribal governments with universities
and colleges. This program will use the NIH R01 award mechanism.
Proposed
Funding: This program will use the NIH R01 award mechanism.

Financial Incentives Study
Brief
Description: The National Council on Disability (NCD) is conducting
a series of interrelated studies aimed at improving the employment
of people with disabilities. The first two studies that will address
both public and private policies and initiatives are the Social
Security/Transitioning to Work Study and the Employment Study. As
the third study in the NCD series, the proposed Financial Incentives
Study should: (a) identify among other tasks what factors influence
the use of financial incentives by employers, employees and potential
employees who are people with disabilities; (b) assess what is needed
to address those factors to increase the use of existing incentives
and/or create new incentives; (c) look within and beyond the workplace
regarding the potential role of financial incentives in the increased
hiring of and/or for use by people with disabilities with respect
to aspects of living that also impact obtaining and maintaining
meaningful employment (e.g., affordable and accessible assistive
technology, housing, transportation, health care, personal assistants
and other supports); (d) set forth a model that provides economic
analysis of benefits to costs for employers, and (e) as appropriate
reflect connections with NCD?s Social Security and the
employment studies.
