Title: American Cancer Society Area of Special Interest:
The Role of Healthcare and Insurance inImproving Outcomes in Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment
Brief Description: The American Cancer Society invites applications that investigate the impact of healthcare costs, healthcare system and capacity, insurance status, social factors and delivery of health care services, on outcomes in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. An RFA focusing on this area of focus was initiated in 2007 and will be in place until 2011, with set aside dollars each year. Due to the large number of meritorious proposals received in 2009, the set aside dollars for this RFA ($1,000,000) have already been expended for 2009 so there are no specific set aside dollars for such research this cycle. However, this is an area of special interest to the Society and we therefore encourage applications, both new and revised applications. Although there is no set aside for these studies in this cycle, applicants will be eligible for funding from the general pool of funds for cancer control research. Applicants will be competing against other applicants whose studies focus on a variety of other areas of health policy and health services research.

Promoting Careers In Aging and Health Disparities Research (K01)
Brief Description: The goals of NIH-supported career development
programs are to help ensure that diverse pools of highly trained
scientists are available in adequate numbers and in appropriate
research areas to address the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and
clinical research needs. The focus of this FOA is limited to health
disparities related to aging. For purposes of this funding opportunity,
eligible individuals are applicants who have been determined by
the grantee institution to be committed to a career in health disparities
research related to aging and who are members of or knowledgeable
about health disparity population groups.Nationally, health disparity
population groups include but are not limited to African Americans,
Hispanic Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians,
Pacific Islanders, the medically underserved, low socioeconomic
populations and rural populations. This FOA is related to the NIA
Health Disparities Strategic Plan and will help to build capacity
in aging and health disparity research.See: http://www.nia.nih.gov/AboutNIA/StrategicPlan/DirectorsMessageHD.htm.
The plan is updated annually and makes it clear that health disparity
populations are minority populations, low socioeconomic status (SES)
population groups, and rural populations groups.Homeless, Medicaid,
medically indigent, migrant and disabled population groups may also
be included. The goals of the Strategic Plan are to reduce and eliminate
health disparities, expand minority health and health disparity
research education and training opportunities for underrepresented
scientists (individuals from racial and ethnic groups, individuals
with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds),
and to provide information to these groups about treatment, prevention,
and management of disease.

Ladder to Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Community
Health Leaders
Brief
Description: In an increasingly complex and fragmented U.S.
health system, community-based nonprofit organizations provide critical
support for millions of underserved Americans. These organizations
encounter growing demand for services at the same time that their
financial resources are decreasing. The impending exodus of senior
nonprofit leaders due to the retirement of the baby boom generation
exacerbates the challenges of building leaders for nonprofit organizations.
According to a study conducted by the Bridgespan Group, by 2016
the nonprofit sector will need approximately 80,000 new senior managers
each year. To address these obstacles, nonprofits need to develop
new leaders who can create innovative, client-focused practices,
manage day-to-day operations and serve as visionary catalysts for
systemic change.

Title: Stress Management Interventions to Reduce Risk of
Coronary Artery Disease (R01)
Brief
Description: The sponsor offers support for research to evaluate
the efficacy of stress management interventions on intermediate
outcomes purported to be in the biological or behavioral mechanistic
pathway through which mental stress (MS) is thought to influence
major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with confirmed coronary
artery disease (CAD). These include sub-clinical measures of atherosclerosis,
measures of cardiac or endothelial function, or measures such as
cardiovascular reactivity or neuro-humoral response to a provocative
mental stress test. The ultimate goal is to determine whether stress
management interventions can slow progression of CAD or reduce MACE
and, if so, to translate effective stress management interventions
to clinical practice. This program will use the NIH Research Project
(R01) award mechanism.
Proposed
Funding: This program will use the NIH Research Project (R01)

Title: Mechanisms, Models, Measurement, & Management
in Pain Research (R01)
Brief
Description: New and innovative advances are needed in every
area of pain research, from the micro perspective of molecular sciences
to the macro perspective of behavioral/social sciences. Although
great strides have been made in some areas, such as the neural pathways
of pain, pain and the challenge of its treatment have remained uniquely
individual and largely unsolved. Proposals that seek to improve
the understanding of the causes, costs, and societal effects of
both acute and chronic pain and the relationships between the two
are highly encouraged. Additionally, proposals that link such understandings
to the development of better approaches to therapeutic interventions,
including complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions,
and management of acute and chronic pain are in keeping with the
current translational focus of NIH and are encouraged.

Parenting Capacities and Health Outcomes in Youths and Adolescents
(R01)
Brief
Description: The sponsors offer support for research aimed at
increasing the parenting skills and capacities of parents and caregivers
to improve the health outcomes of their young and adolescent children.
Interventions targeting two or more risk factors that indicate ineffective
parenting practices (e.g., lack of appropriate parental monitoring,

parental stress and depression, lack of parent-child bonding and
negative discipline methods) that simultaneously focus on multiple
high-risk adolescent health behaviors (e.g., unhealthy dietary behaviors,
inadequate physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug
use, sexual behaviors, and unintentional (e.g., accidents) and intentional
behaviors (e.g., firearm related injuries), are fundamental to this
initiative. Interventions that target the reduction of a broad range
of family risk factors and simultaneously build upon protective
factors are highly encouraged. Parents and similarly situated caregivers
of children ten-to-eighteen years of age are the targets of this
initiative. This PA will use the NIH R01 award mechanism.

Title: Public Welfare Foundation-Grants Program
Brief
Description: The sponsor supports organizations that address
human needs in disadvantaged communities, with strong emphasis on
organizations that include service, advocacy and empowerment in
their approach, with particular interest in efforts that combine
two or all three of these elements. The sponsor provides both general
support and project-specific grants. Although most grants cover
a period of one year, the sponsor accepts requests for funding renewals
and also makes multi-year grants.
Proposed
Funding: The sponsor's average grant is $45,163. All requests
should be relative to the budget and needs of the organization applying;
however, it would be unusual for the sponsor to make a very large
(over $50,000) grant to an organization it has not worked with before.
It is also unlikely that a first-time grant would exceed half of
the proposed budget.

a series of interrelated studies aimed at improving the employment
of people with disabilities. The first two studies that will address
both public and private policies and initiatives are the Social
Security/Transitioning to Work Study and the Employment Study. As
the third study in the NCD series, the proposed Financial Incentives
Study should: (a) identify among other tasks what factors influence
the use of financial incentives by employers, employees and potential
employees who are people with disabilities; (b) assess what is needed
to address those factors to increase the use of existing incentives
and/or create new incentives; (c) look within and beyond the workplace
regarding the potential role of financial incentives in the increased
hiring of and/or for use by people with disabilities with respect
to aspects of living that also impact obtaining and maintaining
meaningful employment (e.g., affordable and accessible assistive
technology, housing, transportation, health care, personal assistants
and other supports); (d) set forth a model that provides economic
analysis of benefits to costs for employers, and (e) as appropriate
reflect connections with NCD?s Social Security and the
employment studies.

Substance Abuse Policy Research Program
Brief
Description: This program is designed to encourage experts in
public health, law, political science, medicine, sociology, criminal
justice, economics, psychology and other behavioral and policy sciences
to address policy issues related to substance abuse. Policy research
projects will be funded in four areas: tobacco, alcohol, other drugs
and combinations of tobacco, alcohol and/or other drugs. Projects
may address public policies at the national, state or local level,
or they may address private-sector policies within companies, associations,
unions or trade groups. Researchers are encouraged to monitor the
policy environment to identify unique and timely research opportunities
that might be available in their areas of interest. Researchers
are also encouraged to collaborate with policy-makers, advocacy
groups and other policy organizations both as part of the research
design and to ensure that research results are widely disseminated.
As the focus of this program is the United States, studies of policies
in other countries will be considered only to the extent that they
may directly inform U.S. policy.
Proposed
Funding: Up to $3.5 million is available for this round of funding.
Two types of funding are currently available (both for up to three
years of funding): projects totaling less than $100,000; and projects
totaling $100,000 to $400,000.
Agency
Deadlines: There are two stages in the application process for
proposals requesting amounts of $100,000 to $400,000: submission
of a letter of intent by August 27, 2004, followed by submission
of a full proposal by January 15, 2005, if invited to do so. Proposals
requesting less than $100,000 may be submitted at any time.
