Welcome to Southern University's Department of Science/Math Education, a Ph.D. Degree-granting unit, administratively housed in the Graduate School.
The Science/Mathematics Education Program, also known as SMED, is a relatively new program that was implemented in 1998. The objectives of the Program are the production of new knowledge, processes, and products in science/mathematics education; the production of an ethnically diverse cadre of research scholars; and the delivery of professional services--in line with the first and second objectives-to local, state, and national educational communities and other general audiences. An explicit goal of this program is to attract minority and non-minority students alike.
This interdisciplinary program is unique in that students who receive the Ph.D. from the Department will have, in addition to research skills in education, a Master's degree or master's equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or in one of the science content areas. Presently, there are 42 students enrolled in the Program, most of whom are part-time. To serve these students are a core faculty of five and an affiliate faculty, which include two professors from the departments of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, mathematics, and curriculum and instruction.
