The Southern University (SU)/AmeriCorps*VISTA Summer Associate program offers a short-term opportunity for young men and women to assist current AmeriCorps*VISTA project activities by serving as "hands-on volunteers."

This is a prime oppurtunity for individuals, particularly college age students, to be involved in national service, knowing they will make a difference.

The SU-Associates work to move more low-income individuals and communities toward long-term financial independence and self-sufficiency. They also work to protect children-often the most vulnerable victims of poverty-by strengthening their families through educational programs. Summer Associates support the projects providing summer programs for youth.

Recruitment and Placement: Associates:

  • Must be atleast 18 years of age at the time of placement;
  • Must serve on a full-time basis during the project period; and
  • May not have outside employment during the project period.

Associates receive

  • A subsistence allowance $833 per month and
  • For those who assist during the entire 10-week period, a $1,000 educational award towards their tuition.

Associates do not receive:

  • Health Coverage;
  • Life Insurance;
  • Child Care Allowances; or
  • Relocation Allowances.
