The Southern University (SU)/AmeriCorps*VISTA program has provided individuals an opportunity to provide community service in a capacity building role. AmeriCorps* VISTA members assist the Center for Social Research and their community partners in door-to-door surveys, community outreach, recruit volunteers and program participants and other similar activities, benefiting the community by helping residents improve their quality of life and move out of poverty.

Benefits include:

  • Subsistence allowance of approximately $833 per month;
  • Orientation training;
  • Limited health care benefits
  • Student loan forbearance or deferment; and
  • For those who successfully complete a year of service, either an AmeriCorps Education Award ($4,750)or an end-of-service stipend ($1,200)

Below was the eligibility

  • Must be atleast 18 years of age;
  • May not have outside employment or attend school while serving as a VISTA member;
  • Must serve on a full-time basis for at least one year; and
  • Are limited to a maximum of three years of service.
