Program Services

Program services and activities are divided into four (4) categories designated for twelfth, eleventh, tenth, ninth, eighth, seventh and sixth grades. Level of services provided is based on the participants’ needs and grade level at the time of entry into the program.

At the sixth - eighth grade levels, special emphasis is placed on academic skills and on career development so that students can understand how all of their activities, in and out of school, can provide opportunities for exploring and expanding their abilities, interests and values.

At the ninth - tenth grade levels, more emphasis is placed on exposing youth to the many available occupations and career opportunities so that they can develop a broad knowledge of the world of work; and relating their career choices to academics, interests, and abilities.

The eleventh graders are assisted in narrowing their career choices down to a major group or occupational clusters so that their courses of study can be adjusted to those chosen fields. Postsecondary choices are emphasized to become aware of test scores, applications, scholarships, and institution requirements.

Twelfth grade students who enter at this level are assisted in making long range objectives. Since many of them have already made decisions regarding their careers, the staff directs its energies towards assisting this group in ascertaining whether or not their career choices are realistic based on identified goals, values, abilities, and interests.

Through monthly counseling sessions, the identified needs of participants are addressed by providing support services to enhance: test-taking and study skills; reading, writing and comprehension skills; personal-social development; and transitional adjustments. These underlying factors can prohibit successful experiences for students. Pre- and post-test are utilized in the assessment of meeting the need of participants. An assessment profile of each participant is maintained to measure growth and development as a result of the designed activities and services.

Initiative Component Tutoring

The INITIATIVE component simply provides tutoring to selected participants in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th to increase their performance and mastery in core subjects- english, math, science, reading, language arts, and social studies- that includes use of technology. Student’s level of comprehension or mastery of subject instruction is measured by GPA or grades earned, and standardized testing (CAT, LEAP, PSAT, etc). Each measuring instrument has an established score one must achieve to determine pass or failure, high or low, good or bad. ETSI attempts to enhance the students’ opportunity to make the passing, the high or the good score.
