Southern University celebrates 144 years with ‘Founders’ Month’ events through March
Southern University is celebrating its 144th anniversary with a host of events during “Southern University Founders’ Month” in March. Themed, “Honoring our Legacy — Living our Mission,” activities include the annual Founders’ Day Convocation on Thursday, March 7 at 10 a.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center at Southern University and A&M College. This year, students will also be honored for their academic achievements.
Delivering the convocation address is Dr. Russell J. Ledet, a Southern alumnus, physician, and scientist. A Navy veteran from Lake Charles, Ledet is widely known for his inspirational journey from a hospital security guard to a Triple Board resident and researcher.
Other events throughout the month curated by Southern University System campuses include exhibits and panels focusing on cultural impact, philanthropy, alumni relations, health and wellness, professional development, and more. For a full list of events, go to subr.edu/foundersmonth.
About Southern University and A&M College
Southern University and A&M College was founded in 1880 in New Orleans. It was the first public higher education institution in Louisiana for Black people. Upon its relocation to Baton Rouge in 1914, J.S. Clark was Southern’s first president. Today, it is the flagship of the Southern University System, established in 1974 by constitutional mandate, the only historically black college and university system in the nation. Presently, the System is composed of Southern University and A&M College and four member institutions: Southern University Law Center (est. 1947), Southern University at New Orleans (est. 1956), Southern University at Shreveport (est. 1964), and the Southern University Cooperative Extension Program (est. 1972), which became the fifth component of the System in 2001 and is now named Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
