Mission

The staff of the UCC realizes that the college years pose challenges and opportunities. The UCC mission is to provide a safe and confidential environment for the students to explore and resolve social and personal issues and concerns that may affect their emotional functioning as well as hinder their academic matriculation.

The UCC staff is committed to the promotion and celebration of diversity and multiculturalism; to that end we strive to work from a model where we appreciate and value knowledge, skills, and awareness of commonalities as well as differences in the areas of age, ethnicity, gender, language, mental and physical ability, race, sexual orientation, social and economic status, spirituality and world view. We are committed to providing an environment that is both comfortable and welcoming; an environment where students feel every aspect of their identity is recognized, valued, and respected. This environment is created for all whom we come in contact with through our missions of service and training.

Eligibility for Services

The University Counseling Center (UCC) provides confidential services to students regularly enrolled at SUBR whether full or part-time. The cost of these services is free. Services offered would depend on the needs and resources of the student balanced against the available resources of the Center staff. Couples may be seen at the UCC as long as one partner is a SUBR student.

The ethical codes of the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and, the Louisiana State Law guide the policies and practices of SUBR Counseling Center. This means information discussed in counseling is strictly confidential and will not be released to anyone outside SUBR UCC without the client's written consent. The UCC is the “holder” of all client records; records do not become apart of Southern University records. However, there are legal and ethical limits to confidentiality. UCC counselors are available to discuss these in detail.
