Welcome to “Journey to the Bluff” New Student Orientation! We are thrilled that you’ve joined the Jaguar Nation and we cannot wait to officially welcome you to the Southern University family! Orientation is your first step in discovering what it truly means to be a Jaguar. Our dynamic sessions are designed to introduce new students, parents, and families to life at Southern University—connecting you with essential resources, helpful information, and inspiring people who will guide your journey. Get ready for a full day of energy, learning, and excitement as you begin this incredible chapter. A detailed schedule of events will be emailed to you prior to orientation—so stay tuned and get ready to experience the Bluff like never before!
All Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026 Orientation Sessions are mandatory for students! The sessions will feature departmental presentations, campus tours, and social activities. A non-refundable $150 registration fee is required for all students attending New Student Orientation. This fee covers your Jaguar swag bag and other exciting orientation gifts! Students and parents are responsible for their own meals.
Students should register for New Student Orientation by logging into their Slate Account and choosing “Events and Orientation”.
After finishing New Student Orientation registration, first-time freshmen and transfer students are required to complete the New Student Pre-Orientation Course. The training must be completed before participating in New Student Orientation.
NEW STUDENTS
- Please allocate two (2) hours to complete the course.
- Please monitor your SUS email account-you will receive an email that includes a link to access the course.
- Complete the New Student Pre-Registration Course-this self-paced online experience is designed to help you prepare for your transition to Southern University and A&M College.
PARENT UNIVERSITY
Parents and families are encouraged to attend Parent University, an orientation session for parents. Please click on the link below to register:

Virtual orientations are held from 9:00am-4:00pm

Staying in Baton Rouge: Housing will not be provided during the New Student Orientation for registered students. Students are encouraged to consult our list of hotel recommendations for accommodations. Available hotels include SpringHill Suites - North Baton Rouge and Hilton Garden Inn - Baton Rouge Airport.
