Responsibilities

The Computer Science Intern Program (CSIP) is an intense and exciting 12-week immersive internship open to select college undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Computer Science or closely related disciplines. Interns are assigned to projects that contribute to NSA's mission. Projects culminate in a short presentation and technical paper. Projects are typically in the areas of:
  • Big Data
  • Information Retrieval
  • Information Visualization
  • Computer and Network Security
  • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence
  • Human Language Technology/Computational Linguistics
  • Ontology/Taxonomy and Graphical Analysis
  • Information Query and Question Answering
  • Knowledge and Data Representation, Distillation, and Sharing
  • Knowledge and Database Crawling
  • Software Agent Planning and Control
  • Signal Processing
  • Architecture & Systems

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be eligible to be granted a security clearance.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking college or university program with at least one semester remaining following the internship. Or, for those students about to graduate from one degree program, it is necessary to clearly state future plans demonstrating continued academic pursuits in the term immediately following the internship.
  • Must provide transcripts covering academic qualifications described above.
  • Must major in Computer Science or a very closely related discipline.
  • Must be available for an operational interview and other applicable processing between the months of December 2018 and March 2019.
Additional Qualification: 

Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed the following courses:

  • Data Structures
  • Discrete Mathematics or Discrete Structures
  • Calculus I and Calculus II

Candidates are also expected to have taken courses in two or more of the following areas:

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Students are paid a competitive salary commensurate with their education level.
  • Receive annual leave, sick leave, and paid federal holidays.
  • Participation in agency-wide extracurricular programs.
  • Daily transportation to and from work is not provided. Students participating in the program are highly encouraged to bring a vehicle. Carpooling with other students MAY be available but NOT guaranteed.
  • Subsidized housing accommodations are available upon request if school is located in excess of 75 miles from NSA main HQs campus.

Transcripts:

Transcripts may be issued directly by the Registrar, or issued to you by the Registrar, then emailed to Summer_CSIP@nsa.gov. If your Registrar is capable of directly sending electronic transcripts, please have them sent directly to you and then email the transcript as an attachment. There should be no security restrictions on the emailed transcript, e.g., no password or security certificates that require an internet connection to verify the certificate. If the electronic transcript that the Registrar sends you has those types of security restrictions, please print it, scan the printed copy, preferably to PDF, and email the scanned copy. Please do not send HTML transcripts accessible via a website or text versions thereof.
