SU asks those attending commencement to arrive real early

Southern University is encouraging those attending spring commencement on the Baton Rouge campus to arrive at least an hour before the start of the 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 18 event. There are also instructions for campus entry and parking.

Special attention to traffic is caused by Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament games being played at nearby Lee-Hines Baseball Field.

Campus police request motorists headed to commencement to enter the campus on Harding Boulevard and to head into the F.G. Clark Activity Center parking lot. When the lot is filled, drivers will be directed to nearby lots to park and they will be shuttled back to the Activity Center.

Baseball fans are asked to enter on Swan Street off of Scenic Highway. They will be directed to lots on the northeast side of the Activity Center and other locations nearby. There will be shuttles available for those fans also, according to campus police.

“The most important thing is that those persons attending commencement understand that they need to arrive long before 10:30 a.m. to avoid long traffic lines,” said SU Police Chief Ronald Stevens.

Graduation Parking:

The Southern University Police Department is issuing instructions for traffic arriving on the Baton Rouge campus for the graduation ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

The department encourages everyone to arrive at least an hour early.

·         Traffic entering the campus on Harding Boulevard (The Red Road) will be directed into the Activity Center’s general parking area. Once that lot is filled, motorists will be directed to continue west on Harding to the parking lots along the red road. (Seymour Gymnasium, Bethune, Washington, and Bradford dormitories, the Archives Bldg., SU Museum of Art, SU Law Center, Smith-Brown Union and along E.C. Harrison Drive)

CAT’s buses will transport those persons parked in the away lots back to the Activity Center and back to their parking areas after graduation.

·         Traffic entering the campus Swan Avenue (The Blue Road) will not be allowed to park in the Activity Center parking lot. They will be sent to the parking lots along the blue road. (The grass lot, A.W. Mumford Stadium and parking lots along Isabel Herson Street.)

CAT’s buses will transport those persons to the Activity Center and back to their parking areas after graduation.

·         Vehicles with handicapped plates or hang tags should enter the campus on Harding Boulevard and enter the Activity Center parking and head right or left to enter the area for handicapped parking. The “Blue Zone” is an elevator for easy access into the Activity Center.
