Chancellor Llorens continues talks with Turkish education officials

Chancellor James L. Llorens has held meetings this week with education officials from Turkey in the University’s continuing effort to establish ties that will result in students from the western Asia country attending classes on Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus.

Since Tuesday, Llorens and other University personnel have met with top officials with Turkey’s Measurement, Selection, and Placement Center (OSYM in Turkey), the sole governmental agency in charge of managing the central admission processes to all Turkish universities. The University and Turkey have already agreed in principal with OSYM to study the possibilities of admitting Turkish students at Southern.

Professor and Dr. Eran Oztemel, the Vice President of the Measurement, Selection, and Placement Center, discussed course availability, registration requirement and other related matters with Llorens, Director of Recruitment Michelle Hill, Dr. Barbara Carpenter, director of the Center for International Students and Dr. Mwalimu Shujaa, dean of the Graduate School.

Oztemel has also held talks with Dr. Freddie Pitcher, Chancellor of the Southern University Law Center, about the possibility of students entering the law school.

Llorens went to Turkey several months ago to start negotiations and several education officials from Turkey later visited the Baton Rouge campus.
