Young musicians explore jazz at Batiste Institute

Young musicians from around the state participated in the recent Alvin Batiste Jazz Institute Summer Jazz Camp, sponsored by the Southern University Division of Arts and Humanities.

The students, 9th through 12th graders, received instruction from a number of jazz luminaries including saxophonist Wess "Warm Daddy" Anderson, percussionist and Jazz Institute Assistant Director Herman Jackson, Jazz Institute Director Harry Anderson, Sr., horns, Donald Evans, piano, Michael Esnault and others.

Students received instruction on improvisation, ear training, small ensemble playing and other techniques.
