SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM ONLINE PROGRAMS

 

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The Associate of Science Degree in Business Management is designed for students seeking a broad program of study in all phases of business practices. This degree not only focuses on the core of management, but also encompasses the critical areas of business operations (communications, finance, accounting, economics, and business law). The capstone course for the program is an internship where the students will demonstrate their acquired skills in the functional areas of business management. Additionally, the students who seek to continue their studies in a business discipline beyond the Associate Degree will be well prepared. The curriculum includes 32 credit hours in General Education courses, 30 credit hours in core requirements, and 6 credit hours in business-related courses. 

NOTE: To qualify for a second degree or certificate, regardless of whether the first was granted by Southern University at Shreveport or another institution, the student must earn an additional 15 semester credit hours for a second associate degree and 9 semester credit hours in a certificate program . . . These additional hours must be taken in residence in five (5) years of the time of graduation (University Catalogue).


ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Health Information Technology associate degree profession has been listed as one of the top five professions for rapid growth potential with an estimate of more than 47,000 additional professionals needed by the year 2008 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In addition, the U.S. News and World Report has twice selected the health information technology profession as one of the top 25 careers in the nation 

The Health Information Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Program graduates are, eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). After successfully passing the examination, graduates earn the credential RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician).

BACHELOR OF GENERAL STUDIES

The Online Bachelor of General Studies with a minor in History is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. The program offers a unique degree that provides students flexibility to complete their academic program online. 

The General Studies Program, in collaboration with other offices and academic departments at SUNO, offer enrolled students a variety of academic support services designed to improve their academic performance and enhance their total educational experience. It is our desire to assist the student in developing as a professional; making them more marketable in the workplace.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE (BSCJ)

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Program prepares students for careers in the sub-agencies of the criminal justice system and for continued education in professional and graduate schools. National and international themes related to contemporary challenges to the police, courts, and corrections are among those studied and explored in theory and in practice through a diverse curriculum. The Criminal Justice Program seeks to educate students in the skills required for a successful professional career. 

These skills include: critic thinking, the ability to communicate thoughts effectively in oral and written form, research methods, statistical and data analysis, and computer technology. In addition, the program teaches students to use ethical behavior in applying the knowledge acquired to factual situations and problems.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE (BSCS)

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science is designed to provide graduates with a strong foundation in computer science and related disciplines. The curriculum encourages students to become knowledgeable of cutting-edge techniques and practices. Students will learn the requisite core skills and theoretical foundations that have historically driven computer science. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science program have been successful in pursuing careers in research and application-oriented positions in business, industry, government, and education. Students are exposed to a broad range of fundamental concepts in such areas as software engineering, computer organization, database systems, management information systems and operating systems, as well as to a wide variety of computer applications.

BACHELOR OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (BIS)

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree will enable students to develop competencies across a range of disciplines as selected by the student as they prepare for various career tracks. The degree provides a high-quality, comprehensive liberal education and serves to meet the diverse needs of current and future SUBR students. 

The program embraces the opportunity for students to design a course of study that meets their personal and academic objectives and further their professional growth.

Students select from four pre-set interdisciplinary concentrations or propose a unique individualized concentration which is granted upon approval by a committee of faculty advisors. The program is designed to maximize college credit through a cross-disciplinary focus and enable students to combine their previous academic and work experiences in two or three distinct disciplines.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PSYCHOLOGY (BSP)

The Department of Psychology offers courses designed to foster an understanding of behavior and mental processes. The department's undergraduate degree program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Psychology. The program provides a foundation into the affective and cognitive processes that underlie human development and behavior. Students who obtain a B.S. degree in psychology may work in mental health facilities, government or business, but they will not be qualified for jobs as professional psychologists without further education. Options are available in prevention and substance abuse counseling that leads to certification in both areas. The department is an approved site to offer substance abuse and prevention course credit. Interested students should discuss this option with their advisor.

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

The primary goal of the Southern University Online MBA Program is to prepare students to compete nationally and in the global marketplace. Based on this goal, the MBA Program recruits, admits, prepares and graduates MBA students who are competent to function as effective managers and leaders as well as to pursue entrepreneurial career opportunities.

The program is designed for working professionals who aspire to transform their career to a higher level. The main goal of the online program is to prepare effective global business leaders who can run their own business or work for major corporations and public sector organizations and grow to medium and upper level managerial positions.

The Online MBA is accredited through The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

The College of Business continuously designs and maintains proactive, innovative and challenging curricula both for its undergraduate and the MBA Program. In line with this strategy, the MBA Program has steadily enhanced its curriculum plan that enables our students to meet the changing demands and challenges of the global marketplace of today.

EXECUTIVE MASTER OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (EMPA)

The Online Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. This program is designed specifically for those who already have professional and public sector experience, who are striving for a higher level of education which may provide more opportunities to grow, to work and serve in the public sector.

An EMPA applicant must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum 2.7 cumulative undergraduate G.P.A., though a G.P.A. of 3.0 is preferred.

Applicants must have at least three (3) years of middle to upper level professional, managerial, supervisory, or combined work experiences. Two out of the three years must be within the public sector (government and/or non-profit organization). Middle to upper level managerial experience includes positions such as, but not limited to, directors, assistant directors, high-level technical staff, senior managers, project/program managers.
