Certification-Only Alternate Program
NOTE: The Non-Master's Certification Program will be replaced by the Certification-Only Program beginning Fall 2010. All candidates currently enrolled in the Non-Master's Certification Program will have until July 1, 2013 to complete their program of study.
The College of Education, through the Louisiana Department of Education, offers a Certification-Only Alternate Program, which was designed with the intent of augmenting the number of certified teachers in the State of Louisiana. This program offers flexibility in delivery (e.g., face to face and/or online) and is designed to serve candidates who may not elect participation in or be eligible for certification under either the Practitioner Teacher Alternate Certification Program or the Master's Degree Alternate Certification Program.
All candidates must complete 80 hours of teacher readiness traning in order to be eligible to hold the practitioner's license. This requirement must be completed prior to applying to teach in the state.
Candidates must satisfy admission requirements stipulated by Southern University and must be officially admitted to the Certification-Only Alternate Program before pursuing any coursework. The credit hours for the program ranges from 27-33 hours.
Upon admission into the program candidates will report to the Department of Curriculum & Instruction to be assigned an advisor. Candidates must meet with their advisor every semester to make certain that they are enrolled in the correct courses.
All teacher candidates must complete a total of 140-180 hours of field experiences in order to satisfy the requirements of the program. Failure to meet this requirement may delay the candidates certification request. Candidates may meet with the Director of Field Experiences to view the number of hours that have been accumulated. Field Experience orientation is held once every semester.
All candidates enrolled in the program must complete either two semesters of internship or one semester of student teaching. The PLT must be passed in order to enroll in these courses. This requirement will not be waived with prior years of teaching experience.
