Dr. Carpenter awarded 2011 Chapter Volunteer of the Year

Southern University’s Dr. Barbara Carpenter, Dean of Center for International Education received the 2011 Chapter Volunteer of the Year Honor Roll award for volunteering over five decades of service to the March of Dimes.

The Chapter Volunteer of the Year award is a national recognition designed to acknowledge outstanding volunteers serving March of Dimes through leadership, service and dedication to the organization. Candidates selected for the award are voted by staff members each year.

Carpenter was presented the award at the  recent National March of Dimes Volunteer Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

“It is an honor to be recognized by such a well-known organization,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter joined March of Dimes in 1961 when she raised funds for the Mother’s March fundraiser. Later, her involvement would deepen with her leadership role with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and engaging in projects like ‘Stork’s Nest’ and various missions.  As a leader she is able to guide the members of the sorority and ensure continued participation with March of Dimes.

Currently serving as the Louisiana Chapter Chair, Carpenter has achieved numerous accolades for the chapter including: Chapter of The Year-Diversity for two consecutive years, President’s Team award in 2009 and Chapter of the Year-Revenue. She has served on the March of Dimes National Advisory Board from 2002-2006, vice-chair of the chapter board and has served on various special event committees in raising funds for the chapter.

Carpenter is committed to the mission of the March of Dimes. “It works to help women and most especially minority women to have proper medical care and thus being able to have healthy babies,” said Carpenter.
