Chancellor's Notes

Hello Jaguar Nation:

Friday, December 12, 2014 will be a special time for 465 students at Southern University and A&M College.  These students have completed all requirements for the conferring of an undergraduate degree in their respective majors.

Marching into the F.G. Clark Activity Center to music and applause will be a great moment of fulfillment for the students, their parents, guardians and friends. Students, please enjoy what will surely be remembered as one of your finest hours.

I want to thank each graduate for attending Southern University. This college commencement will be a first for both the graduates and me. For most, it will be their first college degree. For me, it will be my first time presiding over a commencement as Acting Chancellor of Southern University and A&M College.

To those students who are receiving master's degrees, MBAs and PhDs, thank you for selecting SUBR for your advanced degrees.

I want to also congratulate Jamaal Ali Martin on being the Chief Student Marshal for the fall 2014 graduating class. Being an honor student and a football player, Jamaal is a role model for all students and he provides the public with a positive view of the student-athletes whom we recruit at SUBR. We are very proud of our Chief Student Marshal.

I ask members of the Southern University family to demonstrate their support in two ways on Friday and Saturday. The University will be selling Centennial Year Commemorative books on the concourse of the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the day of graduation. The timeline books provide a glimpse of SU's history from its beginnings in New Orleans to this year's Centennial celebration. The book is on sale for $20 and profits from each sale will be credited to the Chancellor's Need-Based Scholarship fund. I hope that you will consider purchasing a book to help a deserving student continue his/her education.

On Saturday December 13th at 4 p.m. in the Activity Center, SUBR will present its Centennial Christmas Concert, the closing event of our Centennial Year. Come out to witness the great music by our Concert Choir and Orchestra. We will also have a statewide Mass Choir and a Ministers' Choir, along with the Centennial Lyrical Dance Team made up of our incredible Gold 'n Bluez Dance Team.

Invite everyone you know.  The event is free and open to the public.
