5 MINUTES WITH SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

w/Alfred Harrell III

Executive Director

Southern University System Foundation

5mwSU: Congratulations on the success of the Million Dollar March Campaign.

Harrell: Thanks! We are really happy that we achieved our campaign goal. We had 796 donors give a total of $1,126,294.60 in cash gifts during the 90-day campaign.

5mwSU: How did your office pull this together to so fast?

Harrell: We had an outstanding group of committed volunteers that rolled up their sleeves and reached out for support. Our strategy was to engage as many volunteers as possible while creating a comprehensive solicitation model. The campaign kicked off with a direct mail piece to over 60,000 alumni and followed up with a 90-day viral fundraising appeal campaign. Our team did a great job of working together to get the word out and secure cash gifts.

5mwSU: The big question on the Baton Rouge campus is what does it mean for SUBR?

Harrell: Roughly $710,000 in cash gifts has been donor designated for SUBR departments and programs. SUBR students will be able to apply for scholarships and need-based tuition assistance using the funds donors designated to each campus. SUBR faculty members will be able to access dollars raised for research projects, professional development and endowed professorship, etc.

5mwSU: So what's next?

Harrell: We'll take sometime over the next few weeks to properly recognize and thank our donors for their support; then we'll begin to prospect, evaluate and plan for next years campaign. The 2015 campaign is set to kick-off on January 1st.
