Southern University professors receive $96,000 grant

Three professors have received a. $96,000 two-year grant to create the Southern University Health Information Technology laboratory (SUHIT).

The project will create, what the project information claims will be the first HBCU multimedia laboratory focused on developing health information technology case studies. Additionally, the SUHIT laboratory will be a training facility for a new planned certification program on health information technologies (HIT).

The professors sharing the grant are Drs. Jarrett Landor, Assistant Professor of Education Theory, Policy and Practice, Victor Mbarika, the Houston Alumnae Endowed Professor in the College of Business, and Joycelyn Harrison, Associate Professor and Chair of the Educational Theory, Policy and Practice.

The project's press release says it will have three specific outcomes. First, it will provide a multimedia laboratory dedicated to developing HIT case studies. This would position SU as a leader in this domain among peer institutions.

Second, the project creatively integrates HIT case studies to create unique lenses through which the meaning of higher-order cognitive processes can be examined and used to inform the design of HIT technologies.

Third, the project fills a crucial pedagogical void by developing instructional materials that can be used to train undergraduate STEM students at a time when few materials exist. SUBR's undergraduate and graduate students, from multiple disciplines, will be involved on the project

The project will serve as a joint collaboration between the College of Business and the College of Education, Arts and Humanities.
