‘Class of 2019’ invade campus for 365 Jaguar orientation

Southern University's newest Jaguars, some with their parents and relatives, were here today for the "365 Jaguar Orientation" program.

The 365 Jaguar Orientation is designed to prepare new students for their Southern University journey and it is mandatory for all first-time freshmen and transfer students.

The orientation is a 3-day event that began Sunday and concludes on Tuesday.

During most of today's program the students and parents gathered in the Cotillion Ballroom and other locations to receive academic advising, first-year planning, information on paying for school, an overview of academic policies, and an overview of university rules, policies, and regulations.

"The students can also use the time to get familiar with the faculty and staff," said Ryan Tucker, the Coordinator of Student Organizations and Leadership Development Programs. "They also get information on the university's history and what's expected of them academically. Overall, it gives them a good head start on the fall semester."

Additionally, there was a parent session used to prepare parents/guardians for what lay ahead for their students.  This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to learn about processes and procedures as well as learn how to successfully move their student through SUBR.

"The parents and students also get information about housing and any scholarships that might be available," Tucker said. "The best thing is that the parents get to know that their students are safe at the university."

Parents, relatives and guardians can also be near the students during the days they here. The university arranged for discounted rates for them at nearby hotels, Tucker said.

More 365 Jaguar Orientation sessions are scheduled: July 19-21, July 26-28, July 31 and August 5-7.  There are four sessions for first-time freshmen, one for transfer students and a one-day session for older, non-traditional students.
