Former Miss SU makes Ebony's top HBCU queens

Former Miss Southern University Shanice Mae Sam is in the current issue of Ebony magazine after being chosen one of the top 2015 HBCU campus queens.

Sam, a recent biology degree graduate, is from Maurice, La., is a graduate of North Vermillion High School.

"Wow, I'm speechless," said about her selection, which was based on the number of votes cast for her. Historically Black Colleges and Universities, across the U.S., used social media, alumni support and other means to get out the vote for their candidates in the online competition conducted by Ebony.

"Being an HBCU queen was one of the greatest experiences ever," Sam said. "I know that not everyone is able to experience this, so it's one thing I will always hold dear to my heart."

Sam said her goal since being selected Miss Southern for the 2014-15 year has been to encourage other students. "The mission is always to inspire, and to show others that you can achieve anything you put your heart to," she said.

In a message to those that voted for her, Sam said, "I just want to say thank you so much for voting for me. This is nothing less than an honor, and I will forever cherish this.
