Mission

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

UNIVERSITY COUNSELING CENTER

Mission

The staff of the UCC realizes that the college years pose challenges and opportunities. The UCC mission is to provide a safe and confidential environment for the students to explore and resolve social and personal issues and concerns that may affect their emotional functioning as well as hinder their academic matriculation.

The UCC staff is committed to the promotion and celebration of diversity and multiculturalism; to that end we strive to work from a model where we appreciate and value knowledge, skills, and awareness of commonalities as well as differences in the areas of age, ethnicity, gender, language, mental and physical ability, race, sexual orientation, social and economic status, spirituality and world view. We are committed to providing an environment that is both comfortable and welcoming; an environment where students feel every aspect of their identity is recognized, valued, and respected. This environment is created for all whom we come in contact with through our missions of service and training.
Eligibility for Services

The University Counseling Center (UCC) provides confidential services to students regularly enrolled at SUBR whether full or part-time. The cost of these services is free. Services offered would depend on the needs and resources of the student balanced against the available resources of the Center staff. Couples may be seen at the UCC as long as one partner is a SUBR student.

The ethical codes of the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and, the Louisiana State Law guide the policies and practices of SUBR Counseling Center. This means information discussed in counseling is strictly confidential and will not be released to anyone outside SUBR UCC without the client's written consent. However, there are legal and ethical limits to confidentiality. UCC counselors are available to discuss these in detail.  The UCC is the "holder" of all client records; records do not become apart of Southern University records.

Services Offered to Students

Individual Therapy/Counseling: The UCC offers individual therapy for any student who wants to explore aspects of his/her personal concerns one-to-one with a therapist.

Group Therapy: Group therapy offers the unique opportunity of joining small groups of students who share common concerns, explore personal issues, and learn new skills to facilitate change. We offer general therapy groups, groups focusing on specific population and groups focusing on specific issues. Groups are formed at the beginning of the semester and typically meet once a week.

Outreach and Consultation: In addition to working with students individually, the UCC offers education programs to the larger University community (i.e., residential life, academic departments, athletics, and student organizations).

SIGI-3 Assessment Tool: SIGI-3 is an interactive career planning and assessment program provided by the UCC. The tool helps students examine motivators and matches work-related values, interests, and skills to educational and career pathways. Individuals can explore a range of options based on their personal choices. SIGI3 integrates self-assessment with in-depth and up-to-date career information that is easy to use and provides students and adults with a realistic view of the best educational and career options for their future success.

Office of Disability Services (ODS), Ms. Jada Netters, Coordinator: The ODS is a student service that falls under the UCC. The ODS office services registered students who qualify under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).
