Two SU students standout at recent vocal competition

Two Southern University students excelled at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Regional Voice Competition held March 9 at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Joshua Staes, an instrumental music major studying the trumpet, earned first place in the “Young Adult” male category. Staes has been studying trumpet with Dr. Craig Heinzen and voice with Richard Hopson.

Briannica Thompson, an English major and voice minor, won in the freshmen women category.

Other students participating in the competition were Denise King, Journae King and Ariel Gibson.

SU voice professors Hobson and Jacqueline Paige-Green served as judges at the competition and the students were accompanied by Professor Charles Lloyd.
